Documents Required to Open an Account

  1. Birth Certificate of the Girl Child

The birth certificate is the most prime document that has to be produced at the time of opening an SSY account. The said document will prove the age and identity of the child. Keypoints-

It should bear the issuance by competent authority.

The date of birth of the child clearly mentioned.

The name of the child which appears in the other documents shall also appear in the birth certificate.

  • Identity Proof of the Parent/Guardian

As the account can be opened by a parent or guardian only, he/she has to provide identity proof. Documents acceptable are:

Aadhaar Card

PAN Card

Passport

Voter ID Card

Driving License

  • Address Proof of Parent/Guardian

The following documents have to be submitted for address proof of the account holder:

Aadhaar Card

Utility bills (electricity, water, or telephone)

Rental agreement

Bank statement with current address

  • Passport-sized Photographs

Recent passport-sized photographs of the following are required:

Girl child: 2

Parent/guardian opening the account :1

The photos should be of standard size and clearly visible.

Additional Documents in Certain Cases

  • Proof of Legal Guardianship

If the account is opened by any person other than the biological parents, then a copy of:

Court order appointing such person as a guardian,

Adoption certificate, if adopted

  • Proof of Indian Citizenship

In case of NRIs opening the account:

Indian passport

OCI card

  • Bank Account Details

For electronic transfers/credit of interest, the following may be required –

Cancelled cheque leaf

Bank passbook copy

KYC Compliance Documents

  • KYC Form

Banks and post offices also require a KYC form to be filled. This comprises of the following :

Particulars of account opening guardian and the minor child

Specimen signature of the guardian
